Giđđageassi (spring summer in Sami)

May-June. Forests and heather turn green. This is the time for salmon fishing in the sea with fixed nets or gillnets. This is an old tradition particularly important for the Coastal Sami and Skolt Sami in the area. It is calving season for reindeer. Birds return. Gulls lay eggs and have traditionally been an important food source. June 1 marks the opening of salmon fishing in the Neiden River. The opening receives great attention with many spectators, and everyone waits to see who catches the first salmon.
